    Advanced modulation technology development for earth station demodulator applications

    The purpose of this contract was to develop a high rate (200 Mbps), bandwidth efficient, modulation format using low cost hardware, in 1990's technology. The modulation format chosen is 16-ary continuous phase frequency shift keying (CPFSK). The implementation of the modulation format uses a unique combination of a limiter/discriminator followed by an accumulator to determine transmitted phase. An important feature of the modulation scheme is the way coding is applied to efficiently gain back the performance lost by the close spacing of the phase points

    Travelling waves in a drifting flux lattice

    Starting from the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equations for a type II superconductor, we derive the equations of motion for the displacement field of a moving vortex lattice without inertia or pinning. We show that it is linearly stable and, surprisingly, that it supports wavelike long-wavelength excitations arising not from inertia or elasticity but from the strain-dependent mobility of the moving lattice. It should be possible to image these waves, whose speeds are a few \mu m/s, using fast scanning tunnelling microscopy.Comment: 4 pages, revtex, 2 .eps figures imbedded in paper, title shortened, minor textual change

    Assessing Inheritance of Zircon and Monazite in Granitic Rocks from the Monashee Complex, Canadian Cordillera

    Zircon and monazite from granitic sheets and dikes in the Monashee complex, Canadian Cordillera, were investigated to determine whether igneous crystallization occurred at 1.9 Ga or 50 Ma with 1.9 Ga inherited zircon and monazite. Four of the five samples are weakly deformed to undeformed, despite occurring in a gneiss dome at the structurally deepest exposed level of the orogen that elsewhere was strongly deformed and partly melted at 50 Ma. Based on U-(Th)-Pb dates from zircon and monazite, field relationships, and mineral composition and zoning, we conclude that the granitic rocks crystallized at 1.9 Ga and were metamorphosed at 50 Ma. All dated zircon is 1.9 Ga (except for 2.3-2.0 Ga inherited cores) and 1.9 Ga monazite comprises \u3e90% of the population in four samples. The remainder of the monazite is 50 Ma and all monazite in one sample is 50 Ma. Composition and zoning of 1.9 Ga zircon and monazite are uniform within samples, yet differ between samples, indicating growth from 1.9 Ga magmas that are unique to each sample. This relationship is unlikely if the grains are inherited because the host rocks are heterogeneous 2.3-2.1 Ga gneisses. The 1.9 Ga zircon and monazite have zoning that is consistent with growth from magmas, whereas the 50 Ma monazite has variable composition and zoning that suggest growth from diverse metamorphic fluids. The results demonstrate that part of the Monashee complex was last strongly deformed and partly melted at 1.9 Ga, and thus largely escaped Cordilleran tectonism

    Inheritance of Gray Leaf Spot Resistance in Corn

    Gray leaf spot disease, caused by Cercospora zeae-maydis Tehon and Daniels, has become a significant disease in Iowa corn (Zea mays L.) production. Incidence of gray leaf spot has increased with the increased use of conservation tillage practices. The inheritance of resistance to gray leaf spot was studied via use of generation mean analyses for five crosses and via use of 100 S1 progenies developed from an F2 population. Experiments were conducted at two locations that included either natural or artificial inoculation with C. zeae-maydis spores. Additive and dominance effects were significant in nearly all instances. Heritability for gray leaf spot resistance among S1 progenies was 0.78. Because resistance seemed to be determined by additive genetic variation, it seems selection for greater resistance to gray leaf spot can be effective. In all instances, the level of gray leaf spot resistance in single-cross hybrids was improved, whether the single-cross hybrid was produced with either one or both parents having resistance. It seems single-cross hybrids will have adequate levels of resistance to gray leaf spot if at least one of the parents has resistance

    What's in a Face? Mentalizing in Borderline Personality Disorder Based on Dynamically Changing Facial Expressions

    The mentalization-based approach to borderline personality disorder (BPD) argues that impairments in mentalizing are a key feature of BPD. Most previous research in this area has concentrated on potential impairments in facial emotion recognition in BPD patients. However, these studies have yielded inconsistent results, which may be attributable to methodological differences. This study aimed to address several limitations of previous studies by investigating different parameters involved in emotion recognition in BPD patients using a novel, 2-step dynamically changing facial expression paradigm, taking into account the possible influence of mood, psychotropic medication, and trauma exposure. Twenty-two BPD patients and 22 matched normal controls completed this paradigm. Parameters assessed were accuracy of emotion recognition, reaction time (RT), and level of confidence, both for first and full response and for correct and incorrect responses. Results showed (a) that BPD patients were as accurate in their first, but less accurate in their full emotion recognition than normal controls, (b) a trend for BPD patients to respond more slowly than normal controls, and (c) no significant difference in overall level of confidence between BPD patients and normal controls. Mood and psychotropic medication did not influence these results. Exposure to trauma in BPD patients, however, was negatively related to accuracy at full expression. Although further research is needed, results suggest no general emotion-recognition deficit in BPD patients using a dynamic changing facial recognition paradigm, except for a subgroup of BPD patients with marked trauma who become less accurate when they have to rely more on controlled, reflective processes
